Two Carp I by Ohara Koson (1900) is a serene Japanese woodblock print from the early shin-hanga era, when artists revitalized classical ukiyo-e techniques with more naturalistic observation and refined color. Koson, celebrated for his exquisitely observed bird-and-flower subjects, turns here to a pair of carp gliding through quiet water. The composition is spare and beautifully balanced: two streamlined bodies curve in gentle counterpoint, set against a light, uncluttered ground that heightens their poise and motion.

This listing is for a museum-quality fine art print of Koson’s design, produced by The Unique Maps Co. on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Multiple sizes are available, with optional framing to arrive ready to hang. We also offer customization—title or margin options, subtle size adjustments, and personalized touches—to suit your space and style.

About the artist: Ohara Koson (1877–1945) was a leading figure of shin-hanga, the early 20th-century movement that renewed Japan’s printmaking by blending traditional woodblock craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Known also by the art names Shoson and Hoson, he became renowned for kachō-ga (bird-and-flower) subjects, capturing wildlife with a quiet lyricism and impeccable design sense. His prints feel intimate and contemplative, inviting close study of pattern, texture, and light.

About the subject: Carp—often called koi in Japanese art—symbolize perseverance, strength, and good fortune. In this work, their graceful, unhurried movement suggests calm resilience. Created at a time when shin-hanga prints reached international audiences, the image reflects a cultural appreciation for everyday nature and the still moments found in water, wind, and light.

About the design: Koson’s restrained palette—soft whites and warm beige offset by gentle orange accents, with whisper-light blues suggesting water—instills a sense of tranquility. Delicate scale patterns and subtle shading lend dimensionality without crowding the eye. Flowing lines ripple across the background to evoke water, while the elegant negative space allows the fish to “breathe,” making the print feel airy and modern. This refined simplicity suits contemporary, minimalist, and Japandi interiors, pairing easily with neutral walls or natural wood and linen textures.

A timeless choice for koi enthusiasts, lovers of Japanese art, and anyone seeking a quiet focal point, this print makes a thoughtful gift for Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day, weddings, housewarmings, or to welcome home someone who has visited Japan or has a special connection to koi ponds and garden sanctuaries.
